What is product management and how is it different from project management?

Product management involves taking charge of every aspect of a product life cycle and includes understanding consumer needs, developing product strategy, directing improvement or growth of a product, monitoring product performance and ensuring product success.

Unlike a product manager, a project manager is not focused on product strategy. Instead, project managers help to coordinate, manage and oversee projects (i.e. sets of tasks designed to achieve specific goals). Their role involves assigning tasks, scoping project resources and coordinating work.

While they are two different roles involving different sets of skills, project and product managers work closely together in order to achieve project goals.
